Thoenes, Frank

Frank Thoenes was born in Nettetal near Dusseldorf, West-Germany. When he was 14 years old he startet playing Double Bass. His first Teacher was H.G. Hilgers from the Music School in Viersen.
In 1986 he won the Competition “Jugend musiziert” (competition for young musician) in West-Germany. From 1987 till 1992 he studied at the Folkwanghochschule in Essen with Prof. Rolf Heister (former Solobass of WDR Symphony Orchester in Cologne).
During his studies he was member in the European Youth Orchester (an Orchester whose members are selected among 4000 students from all over Europe) in the position of a Principal Double Bass. He had the possibility to work with conductors like Claudio Abbado, Matthias Bamert, Bernard Haitink and Zubin Metha.

From 1992 till 1995 Frank Thoenes has got a scholarship as Principal Double Bassist at the “Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss” under its Chief Conducter Johannes Goritzki. He took part in many CD-Recordings and played solo- and chamber music, for example in the Festival Cervantino in Mexiko, in Festivals in Ascona and Salzburg, the “Oberstorfer Musiksommer” and at the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades. Since 2005 the Festival ´Flute hautbois en Livradois´ which takes place in th Middle of France (Auvergne) invites him every summer to play solo and chamber music together with great musicians of European orchestras.

He joint several master classes by Wolfgang Güttler (former member of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Professor in Cologne and Karlsruhe). For these courses he was also engaged as assistent teacher.
In 1998 at the “Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik “(Modern Music) in Darmstadt he recieved a Prize for Interpretation and a scholarship.
Since 1996 he is Principal Bass at the Norddeutsche Philharmonie in Rostock (Northgerman Philharmonic Orchestra).
As an orchestral musician he played also with WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Essen Philharmonic, Radiophilharmonie Hannover and Berlin Symphonic Orchestra, with coductors like Bernhard Klee, Wolf-Dieter Hauschild, Peter Leonard, Niklas Willén, Eiji Oue and Andrey Boreyko.
Concert trips have taken him through whole Europe, America, Asia and Australia.

Since Oktober 2005 he is teacher at the Rostock University of Music and Theater.
